A rice farmer died in a pool of his own blood in Prey Veng province on Saturday after his younger brother attacked him with a scythe “for complaining too much,” police said on Sunday.
The murder occurred shortly before midnight on Saturday at the brothers’ home in Pea Reang district’s Reab commune, according to district police chief Sim Kosal.
The victim, Som Ry, 45, was the family’s second son, and the perpetrator, Som Rom, 24, the fifth, Mr. Kosal said, adding that the pair—often drunk and quarrelsome—had shared a house with a third brother since their parents died many years ago.
On Saturday night, Som Ry was drunk when his younger brother, in a rage, took at least three swings at the back of his neck, the police chief said.
Mr. Rom was at arrested about midnight while fleeing the scene on foot, and later confessed at the provincial police headquarters to murdering his brother, Mr. Kosal said.
“He was mad with his brother for complaining too much,” he said.
