The Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced a man to 10 years in jail on Friday for participating in the murder of a teenage boy outside a *Phnom Penh nightclub last year, while two other suspects who remain at large were sentenced to 11 and 13 years in absentia.
Nou Naren, 18, was gunned down shortly after he and several other youths were ejected from the Neak Meas nightclub in Russei Keo district for fighting in the early hours of September 1.
Hun Toseiha, 21, was found guilty of murder for his role in driving the gunman Hang Sopheap, 24, to the club and waiting while he shot the teenager in the head.
On Friday, Presiding Judge Keo Mony announced the 10-year sentence to Mr. Toseiha.
Mr. Sopheap, the gunman, and another co-conspirator, Em On, were handed 11 and 13 years, respectively.
“The municipal court decided to sentence Hun Toseiha to 10 years, and Hang Sopheap to 11 years and Em On to 13 years in absentia and we have issued an arrest warrant for them,” he said, adding that all three were also ordered to pay a total of 40 million riel (about $9,700) in compensation to the victim’s family.
Upon exiting the courtroom, Mr. Toseiha maintained his innocence. “I was not involved in it. I know nothing,” he said.
