Two men who allegedly shot dead and robbed a sixth-year medical student while he was driving his girlfriend home from a Phnom Penh karaoke parlor in the early hours of Thursday morning have been identified by police but remain on the run, officials said.
Srey Phanith, 24, who studied at International University, was driving his girlfriend, Srey Nuch, home along Street 592 in Tuol Kok district at about 1:30 a.m. when they were approached from behind by two men on a motorbike who pointed a shotgun at them and forced them to pull over, said Sary Buntheng, a unit chief in the municipal polices serious crimes bureau.
Ms. Nuch told police on Thursday the couple had tried to escape but crashed into a parked tuk-tuk when one of the men hit Srey Phanith across the head with the gun, and then shot him four times as he tried to stop them from stealing his Honda Zoomer-X motorbike, Mr. Buntheng said.
He was shot four times and he died because of the serious wounds, he said. Eng Sorphea, the serious crimes bureau chief, said his officers had identified the suspects and were searching for them.
