A military police officer in Battambang province who shot and injured a 24-year-old man on a motorbike after he pulled up to a neighboring house and repeatedly revved his engine and honked his horn was provisionally charged on Tuesday, officials said.
The shooting happened at about 11 p.m. on Monday in Battambang City, said Suon Chhieth, a deputy city police chief.
The victim, while waiting for a female friend to join him, “kept honking and the military police officer came out from his house and fired the gun,” Mr. Chhieth said.
The officer fired his pistol once, intending to scare the driver away, but the bullet hit him in the leg, he said.
Onchrey Saomondol, a deputy commander for the Battambang provincial military police, identified the shooter as Ten Phoeung, 34, a first lieutenant.
Mr. Phoeung was provisionally charged on Tuesday with intentional aggravated violence and was set to return to court today, provincial court spokesman Touch Sopheakdey said.
The victim, Proeung Rotha, a chef who had been drinking before the shooting, was treated at a nearby army hospital, Mr. Saomondol said.
