The CPP will hold an extraordinary congress for about 1,000 members this month to prepare for the June 4 commune elections, the party’s spokesman said on Tuesday.
The CPP’s 40th such congress will be held on December 17 and 18, according to a party announcement.
“The most important issue is to win the election in 2017,” CPP spokesman Sok Eysan said.
In what many saw as an attempt to build loyalty after the party was shaken in the 2013 election, the CPP added 306 new members to its central committee during its congress early last year, including 80 members of the military or security forces.
Mr. Eysan said he did not expect significant changes to be made to the committee this year.
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy on Tuesday predicted that the CNRP would win the popular vote during commune elections in a landslide, though the basis for his projections was unclear.
In a “Forecast for the 2017 Election” posted to social media, he predicted that the CNRP would get 4.26 million votes across the country, compared to 2.61 million for the CPP.
