Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will visit Cambodia next week and is expected to meet with senior leaders, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said on Wednesday.
He said the trip’s details were still being finalized and that more information concerning “the meeting with the Cambodian leader” would be released this week.
Mr. Duterte will meet members of the Filipino community at the Hotel Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra on Tuesday, according to a post on the Philippine Embassy’s Facebook page.
The embassy declined to comment.
Mr. Duterte has proved a highly controversial world leader since assuming the presidency in May.
He remains immensely popular at home, with his war on drugs—despite resulting in thousands of deaths—winning him praise for a no-nonsense attitude toward crime.
Arvin Samson Mamhot, a teacher in Phnom Penh who will attend Tuesday’s event, spoke on Wednesday of his excitement.
“I feel proud because most of the Khmer people I have met always have something good to say about our president,” he said. “I like him because he gets things done.”
