A Cambodian woman who lived in Malaysia for five years and was “violently abused” by the couple that employed her has been repatriated after being compensated for unpaid wages, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
It was not clear if the couple in Malaysia, identified as Chong Cun Cun and Wau Sun Want, has faced criminal punishment.
The 29-year-old woman escaped from the couple in Malaysia’s Selangor state in July and was found by the Malaysian Trades Union Congress and Cambodian Embassy, which placed her in a women’s shelter, the statement said.
The woman, who had worked as a maid, was repatriated on Saturday, it said.
An unidentified Cambodian company sent her to work in 2011 for the couple, who “violently abused” her and denied payment, it said, adding that they were arrested in December and ordered to pay her wages.
Chum Sounry, spokesman for the ministry, said he did not know any details about the legal process in Malaysia, and declined to name the Cambodian company involved because it might interfere with an ongoing investigation.
