Seven people were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking in Banteay Meanchey province this week after two men were caught with large amounts of crystal methamphetamine and a firearm, an official said.
Two men were arrested on Wednesday while attempting to sell drugs in Serei Saophoan City, while a woman and four men, including a Thai national, were nabbed in the provincial capital the following day, said Meas Vyrith, secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs.
“We spent over one month [investigating] until we arrested them. The first day we arrested the two when they attempted to exchange drugs containing nearly 2 kg of methamphetamine — pills and ice,” he said, using a street slang term for the drug.
A handgun was also found on one of the men, he added.
The other five were arrested the following day on suspicion of being involved in drug trafficking, although no drugs were found on them, he said.
“The five other suspects, we arrested them over conspiring to traffic drugs, but we are not sure yet if they were involved with other crimes,” he said.
“We do not know what their plan was to traffic the drugs,”he said, adding that all remained under questioning on Friday.
