A cassava farmer suspected of hacking his godmother to death over her repeated requests for him to pay back a $250 debt confessed to the crime during questioning, police said yesterday.
Sith Sarath, 34, allegedly used an ax to murder Phon Prech, 47, on Tuesday night near the home they shared in Oddar Meanchey province’s Trapaing Prasat district, said Inn Kay, district police chief.
“This was premeditated murder,” Mr. Kay said. “The suspect was angry with the victim because the victim was always asking him to return her money.”
Police arrested Mr. Sarath on Wednesday evening, a few hours after a local villager found Phon Prech’s body with about 12 cuts on her head, shoulders and legs in the bushes outside her hut in Pha’av commune and reported it to police, Mr. Kay said.
A few days earlier, on Saturday, Mr. Sarath had left the residence after another argument and started staying with a friend.
He confessed to the killing under police questioning and was sent to the provincial police headquarters, Mr. Kay said. “The suspect killed his godmother for revenge,” he said.*
