A rice farmer was killed because a zip wire he had installed across a river in Kampot province’s Toek Chou district was too close to the water and he was struck by a passing leisure boat, police said.
Such Hea, police chief of Stung Keo commune, said Heng Mot, 49, was crossing the water on a cable on Friday afternoon when he was struck on the leg by a tourist boat and fell in the river.
The boat stopped, but a search found no trace of him.
When Heng Mot did not return home for dinner, his wife alerted a relative.
His body was found by a neighbor the following morning.
“This accident happened because the boat operator was very fast and the cable rider was very low,” Mr. Hea said.
Chhum Sakun, Mlechkul village chief, said he had warned Heng Mot not to install the cable because he was afraid local children would play on it and drown.
He added that the victim’s relatives had been afraid to report his death in case of legal action from the boat company.
