Flavia Pansieri, the U.N.’s deputy high commissioner for human rights, will arrive in Cambodia today for a five-day mission that will in*clude visits to a local prison and a community facing forced evictions.
In a statement, the U.N. says Ms. Pansieri will also have meetings with Foreign Minister Hor Nam*hong and unspecified civil society groups, making her the most senior U.N. human rights official to visit the country since 2010.
“During her visit, Pansieri will review the human rights situation in Cambodia and the efforts underway to improve it,” the statement says. It does not say which prison or eviction site she will visit, and the U.N.’s local human rights office would not elaborate.
In February, the U.N. sec*ured an extension for its human rights office in Cambodia with the government until the end of 2015.
