Cambodiaís broadband Internet download speed ranks ahead of some of Aseanís more advanced countries, but is far behind the global average, according to the most recent results of Internet speed tests conducted by the U.S.-based broadband testing company Ookla.
The Net Index on Monday ranked Cambodia 119 out of 190 countries with an average download speed of 5.8 Megabits per second (Mbps).
The survey is based on landline and mobile broadband Internet speeds over 30-day periods, and is updated daily.
Phnom Penh, the only city in the country listed in the survey, also had a download speed of 5.8 Mbps.
The country ranking places Cambodia above Malaysia, Burma, Indonesia, Laos and the Philippines.
Malaysia ranked 125th at 5.5 Mbps; Burma was 130th at 5 Mbps; Indonesia was 143rd at 4.4 Mbps; Laos was 146th at 4.3 Mbps; and the Philippines was 159th at 3.4 Mbps, according to the report.
The average global broadband download speed was 18.2 Mbps, with Hong Kong at the number one spot at 79.59 Mbps, followed by Singapore at 67.9 Mbps.
The survey also listed the average broadband upload speed for Cambodia as 6.9 Mbps, not far behind the average global broadband upload speed of 8.2 Mbps.
In Cambodia, some of the top Internet service providers by download speeds included Opennet, Mekongnet, Angkornet and Ezecom.
For mobile Internet, Cambodia ranked 80 out of 109 countries, with an average download speed of 3.1 Mbps and an average upload speed of 1 Mbps. The carriers offering the fastest download speeds, both countrywide and in Phnom Penh, were Smart and Cellcard.
The global average mobile Internet download speed was 7.8 Mbps, while the global average upload speed was 2.9 Mbps.
In the past three years, the number of landline and mobile Internet users in Cambodia has more than doubled from 1.68 million in 2011 to 3.8 million this year.
