Foily kind of sites mumbling that this was a plan by Erdogan to consolidate power.. I dont buy that, him half assed communicating on facetime with a phone held in front of a camera was too panic'ed to appear well planned.. That said he is for sure now using the crisis to that end, 2x00 judges axed, 100s removed from civil positions, hes wiping out any and all authority except his own.

A decent timeline of what we know, provided by vice.

If the army realed wanted a coup it would have been better executed and a lot more soldiers would have been involved.
Turkey has one of the largest armies in the NATO.

Fethullah Gülen, the reclusive cleric blamed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the failed coup in Turkey, has said the uprising by members of the country’s military could have been “staged” by the government.

In a rare and brief interview on Saturday with a small group of journalists at his residence in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, Gülen rejected all accusations that he was behind the coup attempt.

“I don’t believe that the world believes the accusations made by President Erdoğan,” Gülen said. “There is a possibility that it could be a staged coup and it could be meant for further accusations [against Gülen and his followers].”

Turkey government seemed to have list of arrests prepared: EU's Hahn | Reuters

The swift rounding up of judges and others after a failed coup in Turkey indicated the government had prepared a list beforehand, the EU commissioner dealing with Turkey's membership bid, Johannes Hahn, said on Monday.
Following a failed coup attempt on Saturday, Turkish authorities on Sunday rounded up nearly 3,000 suspected military plotters, ranging from top commanders to foot soldiers, and the same number of judges and prosecutors.
"It looks at least as if something has been prepared. The lists are available, which indicates it was prepared and to be used at a certain stage," Hahn said.
"I'm very concerned. It is exactly what we feared."

1998 the death penalty for treason was abolished in the UK.

Although unused, the death penalty remained a legally defined punishment for certain offences such as treason until it was completely abolished in 1998.
