Fidel Castro dead at age 90...

Fidel Castro (the Cuban dictator) finally dies, and all the Cuban Americans are dancing in the streets.

You gotta' be pretty low on the rung, when your ex-countrymen are celebrating your departure.

When I first saw this on the news last night, I thought...it'll be party time in South Florida. 555

The world would celebrate. That bloke right there is the epitome of the word racist.

On Castro, what are people's opinions on the future and direction of Cuba?
I saw Obama making overtures not that long ago. Does Cuba have oil? 55

Today the Media take a brief time out from worrying about Trump being a dictator to praise Fidel Castro.

They make some good rum. I don't smoke, so couldn't care less about the cigars.

From twitter - 'Fidel Castro survived 638 assassination attempts, but even he could not survive 2016'

They also have health care for everybody, and no illiteracy
And yes, he was a dictator. Like a lot in South America.

I've heard that spouted for years and it is only a regurgitation of Castro's ramblings.
Go there and have a look, free it may be but it ain't of any quality.

Worst country I have been to, a sad dispirited frightened people, couldn't wait to get out and very relieved to get back to Jamaica (and that certainly isn't the best of places)

Cappie I respect so many of your posts but this one really made me wonder?

Not only South America but so much of Africa... North Korea....maybe throw in Russia and even the Chinese (although by commitee)

So you have health care but this somehow justifies dictatorship/strong man leadership?

I dunno but it started me questioning your stance on the EU to be blunt.

Mr. Stalin's greatest achievement was eradication of obesity in the Ukraine through innovative agricultural reforms.

I haven't been there, but quite a few people I know have been there as tourist.
They say that it isn't paradise, not by a long way, but they don't paint it as black as you do.
Now as infrastructure, it has everything of other 3rd world countries. Hospitals are not to our standards, but in a lot of those countries they are not. I guess in Nakhon Nowhere the local hospital won't be a Bangkok or Bumrumgrad hospital.
And there is a shortage of many things, but I guess the boycot was part of that.

Sorry butI did not justify dictatorship. I said it was a dictator. But if people here say the positive is old cars (thanks to the boycot), senoritas and good rum, then I may mention non existent illiteracy and health care.

Yes Stalin was one of the worst dictators, and extreme left (not that it matters, a dictator is a dictator).
But you forgot to mention that other one, extreme right, hitler.
One was not better than the other.
And closer by us Mugabe was already mentionned. There are others, like in the Middle East and Africa.
You also forgot to mention Pinochet and Videla, but those were good ones, against communists and liberals, and on "our" side. When Pinochet was arrested for murder in the UK, Tatcher even freed him and let him leave.
And one more thing Kuhio, I said it already before in this forum. western European democrats, christian- and social-, are center parties. Not extreme left or communist as you in the US thinks.

I'm tired of these commies so near to our shores!

    (oopsy-oopsy, forgot about Canada)

Anyway, if Russia can invade and annex Crimea and the Ukraine...I say let's invade and annex Cuba, and get rid of the bad guys.

Then we can put all the casinos and live sex shows and stuff back there!

That would surely invigorate their economy.

Indeed. Plenty of dictators and autocratic leaders on all sides during the course of history. Don't think any side should be particularly proud.

I did actually grow up surrounded by far left people and the delusion that came with it --- and yes, most of them were in fact actual communists. Not the Obama kind of commie that the US right appear to believe is the real deal. They're not.

I think it's more fair to say that extreme Right and extreme Left politics are closer to each other than they are to the more centrist positions. Both extremes rely on totalitarian rule to implement what ever grand scheme of madness has been concocted.
I will say, however, that the extreme Left seems to have more monsterous examples of mass executions in pursuit of their ideological goals. Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot (and Castro to a much lesser extent) vs Hitler.
