Navy Destroyer Collides With Cargo Ship

I'm absolutely mystified that this could happen, in these times?

The "Fitz" undoubtedly has sophisticated radar and anti-aircraft, anti-missile defenses...but get's T-Boned by a massive cargo ship in the middle of the night?

    Obviously some human failure...

Judging by the Thai Army officers I saw in Bangla Rd the other night the watch was probably on their cellphones. Absolutely incomprehensible that this could happen. Hope they find the missing sailors alive and on board.

Time for a ""Navy Lives Matter" movement?

Has there been a Secretary of the Navy confirmed?

Both will hace CAS (collision avoidance system) radar. Problem is many sailors don't use their eyes no more but trust to much on instruments.
I have been sailing with Philippines officers and must say their standard wasn't so high. There were 66 navigation schools in the Philippines, and not all were excellent.
On the other hand, the dammage to the destroyer is on her starboard side, which suggests (initially) that she had to give way to the other one, court will decide. As usual, both will be to blame, thepercentage for each will be to be seen.

These US Navy ships can cost upwards of 2billion dollars.
If if big dumb cargo ship can do this, I hope IS don't pick up on the idea.

I wouldn't want to be in the skippers shoes....

Maybe we should start a "How can they do it" thread - to canvas all the ways the turds can attack us 55

In the first report that I read, it said that the "C.O." was immediately evacuated (helo) from the damaged ship. (relieved of command)

    That was quick.

You're right "slam"...the skipper was injured.

My bad, sorry to infer otherwise.

(Though, he's still in deep-kaka over the collision)

Your remark comes a bit late. It happened 17 years ago just off the coast near Aden. They had to put the destroyer (USS Cole) on a semi-submersble ship and transport it back to the US for repairs.
About the same time they also attacked a Belgian owned but French flag tanker (Limbourg) neae the same position. I know the captain who was sent to clear the situation.

^^^ Slightly (a lot) different circumstances - even you would say - I should have thought !

This wasn't an attack - sounds like a failure to communicate, somehow ?

No wonder Trump needs to throw in more money if the navy can't see a fucking container vessel....

Obviously I answered to post 4 of Changone, where he posted:

But if even this is to difficult for you, I don't know how to explain.

You are probably right as an incident like this could NEVER have happened a year ago.

I do know about the USS Cole attack, it was by a small boat packed with explosives driven at the ship.
The scenario I was thinking about was a small boatload of people taking over a cargo ship and driving it into a US warship.
Somali pirates have held ships to ransom like this.

Amazing that you will hang that hat on a president you do not like and pretending it could not have happened during the tenure of a left-winger that you adore.
    Get real!!

OK, but it would be a lot easier to use a small boat with explosives.
Also easier to pick a vessel on an anchorage than at speed (especially a 30 knots plus destroyer).
