    Photobucket

Photobucket have decided, in their wisdom to start charging a fee of $399 a year if you want them to host your photos on a third party site

Basically, hundreds of thousands of how to's, trip reports with photos, are destined to be ruined from now on.

All my previous photo jokes, all your photos, if hosted and uploaded from Photobucket are now history (or will be very soon)

You'll get an email, similar to the one I have copied below advising you of the new plan (they don't mention the fee) and instructions on how to download all your photos to your PC.

I've downloaded all my photos now, and deleted my Photobucket account and uploaded everything to Flickr.
Whole albums can be done in minutes so its not too much of a chore, just a pain in the ass for so many people with threads ruined because of this.

You can carry on uploading there ,but why bother if they charge to let us show them elsewhere. Anyway, just a heads up and a copy of the email you'll be getting.

WE NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN USING
    PHOTOBUCKET FOR 3RD PARTY HOSTING*

PLEASE UPGRADE TO A PLUS 500 PLAN.

Our Terms of Service does not allow 3rd party hosting with your current account level.

    *What is 3rd Party Hosting?

Photobucket defines 3rd party hosting as the action of embedding an image or photo onto another website. For example, using the <img> tag to embed or display a JPEG image from your Photobucket account on another website such as a forum, Etsy, eBay auction listings, a blog, etc. is definitively 3rd party hosting.
    Why Photobucket?

Photobucket is the global destination for linking and 3rd party hosting. In Photobucket’s 14-year history, the Company amassed over 100 million registered users, over 15 billion images stored, 2 million daily uploads and 10 billion photos accessed monthly.
Easy to Use – Upload a photo from any device and copy the embed code with one click to host a photo with no development or technical knowledge required
Competitive, fixed pricing Offers the only unlimited 3rd party hosting plan (Commercial and Personal Use)
    Are my pictures still safe?

Yes! All your photos are still available by logging into your Photobucket Account. Photobucket has only restricted the ability to view your photos on 3rd party sites.
    Can I download my Photos?

Absolutely, at any time. It is an easy four step process:
Step 1. Login to your Photobucket Account
Step 2. Navigate to your library page
Step 3. View a photo and click the download button
Step 4. The picture will be saved to your computer

Just get you own damn domain.
A domain costs as little as $10 (first year cheaper) and hosting including several GB and a handful of emails figure around $4 per months
The host I use charge $3.95 for 5GB storage, 50GB monthly bandwidth and 5 emails.
The service I use is $4.95 per month with just about EVERYTHING unlimited: email accounts, storage, add-on/sub/parked domains, bandwidth, SQL databases, a free domain name, FTP accounts and more. If you add Facebook ads the service price will be cut to near half.
Add it up and you will be just north of $30 per year with Facebook ads and just south of $60 without ads ... all with unlimited near everything.
I host several domains for friends and for which I charge nothing ... here is an example: Hallmark Motorbike Rentals - Lowest Prices in Pattaya - Formaly Kessaya
Maybe I should charge a dollar or so and I can have all mine for free

$399 per year is highway robbery, for that price I can get MUCH more and for 6 - 13 years of service (no ads or ads)

Yes, your own domain and hosting your own photos is the ideal scenario, but what Photobucket have done it shabby at best.

Once you have posted one of your photos to a third party site using Photobucket as your host, it will disappear very shortly unless you pay what I consider a ransom.

The fcukers have ruined millions of peoples efforts on car forums, travel forums etc etc. Almost impossible with time constraints to go back and edit with a new link.

Well, mine are saved where there is a 1TB limit and no fee (currently) and Photobucket can do one.

If a few people, or a family join together subscribing to one host the cost per person can be next to nothing.
Say 10 share, that will be $0.50 for each per month, plus a domain name which generally is less than $1 per month.
By sharing you can have unlimited (near) everything for under $20 per person per year.
There technically are some catches, but hardly enforced.
The storage being unlimited is conditioned that it related to any of the domains.
I have uploaded many 1,000's of pictures with no relation to the site, but they are generally in the vicinity of 100KB each
At times I upload VERY large files (zip/rar) I add a password that is not complicated as privacy is not important (I have used "1234567890" at times) I then created an index.htm page linking to the file(s) ... no formatting, just a "dummy" HTML page.
Just last month I uploaded near 100GB of my music files with a dummy page and no problem.
A few years ago I uploaded the collection with no password and files clearly named by artist and received a warning.
Bottom line, if you want to store 1000's of picture and videos, no problem.
    Make it a family project
You can even share domain like firstname.domainname.com.

With Photobucket doing what it is doing, just wait till Facebook starts charging 555

Your own domain does not matter much though if the hosting company goes out of business... After 20 years in the tech industry, I am diligent about backups. So many hours or weeks or months gone due to data being lost. Worse of course if the "data" (like photos) are not recoverable. Pretty basic stuff below, but something I would diligently follow. 3-2-1.

Is it only a matter of time before more "free" sites start charging something? I've thought for a long time that the model of funding by advertising alone is not sufficient especially for smaller sites but there is a whole generation who have grown up thinking anything on the internet is automatically free.

Everything that I have on my sites is also on my C drive and C is backed up to two external drives, so all that matters is in three locations and sometimes four.
If the web hosting company I use goes out of business, I could be back with all sites in 24 hours

I couldn't care less about political differences or arguments on this forum, but bringing in someones family is really as LOW as you can get.
I honestly think it's better to shut up than fighting on that level.

    Anyway, just my thoughts.

All my photobucket albums downloaded and saved to an external HD. Photobucket account deleted.
Uploaded to Flickr that gives 1TB free space. As mentioned previously, how long these photo hosting sites can go on with just advertising revenue is debatable.

Lars, you seem to have everything covered. My post was more to point out how many blogs/forums etc are now ruined with missing photos.
If Photobucket had said, OK from now on, any photos downloaded will not be able to be uploaded to third party sites without a fee hardly anyone would complain.

Me too. The Trump thread in particular has ruined this forum, and a few frienships I'd say.

My take is that politics and relligion have no place whatsoever on a travel info forum.

I think the friendships are still there, but it's quite unlikely that we meet as people have moved all over the place. Patong is no longer a meeting spot, and it was quite sad to see Bangla when I spent a week there early this month.
Like I said before I still think I would have a good time with Paulie and Tarzan if we met, even if I have no understanding or sympathy with their political views.
