    Northern Soul

here's a great doco from the Beeb on that oh so esoteric phenomenon Northern Soul

It touched my life in the mid 70's when I was at Uni in Oxford.....I even went on a bus trip up to the NS mecca of Wigan Casino (as featured in the doco) one weekend but mostly for us it was a few small underground clubs down in London where we went to "spin" and dance on the weekends......its was a kind of collective where anyone could get up with their records and play a couple provided it passed muster by the cool committee.... later on in the mid 80's in Sydney a few of us had a Friday night residence at a small inner city club where where we used to spin our most valued collections with a bunch of friends

I still love the obscure soul dance music from this era and I never did actually grow out of the dance style...to this day I still add in the steps I learned on the dance floors of the era

anyway its a great doco whether you knew the music or not....

I always gave it my best NH.....555

actually I never seemed to try..it just came out...I wasn't one for hitting the ground and stuff....I stayed on wobbly feet and relied on a good spin 555

Still really big in Wigan, lots of Northern Soul events still happen. I was a bit too young for it but still like the music and love the nostalgia for the era #KeepTheFaith

^ yeah definitely a NS track Ian.....however there was always argument over records if they were picked up by and re-released by a major record label, as to be truly NS they had to be indie tracks....pretty sure "snake" was picked up later as it had plenty of radio play

An alltime classic is "Seven days too long" by Chuck Wood.....probably became a whole lot more popular when Dexy's did a (fabulous) cover of it about 10 years later

Dexy's were brilliant. Come on Eileen would be right up there in my top ten.
