I would actually really like to go to Rio, a buddy spent half a year there (he speaks spanish and adapted to the south american portugese fairly well) he loved it.. While there is danger, he said he was regularly going around favela partys and places..

I am absolutely sure it is rough around the edges, but I am also sure it would be a wicked party place.. Just maybe leave the rolex tho hey

Can't say I have much interest in it. The time difference will not help but with drugs overshadowing practically every event it is going down the same road as cycling. I heard an idea to have one city per continent as the olympic city and to rotate it between them, thought it was a great idea, the costs are just crazy for a two week event that leaves fk all legacy.

its fantastic , been five or six times , heard of robberies over there with other tourists , but neither myself or friends have ever been involved , just got to be careful and aware of your surrounding , same as any major city ...

Aside from the video floor a pretty uninspiring and almost boring opening ceremony so far.

I've never been but would like to go but for a South American city with an unbelievable party scene and very little fear of crime(in that particular area) go to Medellin Colombia

Parque Lleras is one of the coolest party/bar areas I've ever been to.
A big park surrounded by all bars with patios, good restaurants, clubs
And they actually have bodegas that have full on bar windows where you can walk up an order a mixed drink and walk around with.
Tons of people drinking in the park, in the bars, sometimes dancing in the street

^^ Loads of people recommending Columbia for many reasons. Normal travelers, mongers, cost of great standard of living, nice people, etc..

Not sure columbia is a safe bet for me..

    Safe bet in what way?
Colombia also has the most "normal" neighborhoods in terms of living areas....
Although very nice..... honestly where my buddy has an apartment and I stayed.....it is as nice as Vancouver.
I'd want something a bit more traditional and local.
If you wanted to stay a bit outside the town you can get some amazing sprawling land, almost farm like but very lush.....for decent prices
