    America's Cup or America's shame

Fantastic racing by both teams and controversy over Oracle's cheating has seen many Americans barracking for a NZ win. With 6 wins team NZ needs only 3 more to take the cup south, again.

    Cheers, Rob.

The NZ boat is a faster boat, it has a fuller hull shape which seems to make it tack (change sides of the wind going towards the wind) faster than Oracle USA. When the breeze was up (24/ 25kts) Oracle USA was clearly faster downwind. An interesting, unique event, 72ft foiling catamaran's doing 55mph & staying on the foils through the gybe, not sure Larry will agree after spending USD$ 200 million on the campaign.

I stopped following the Cup since they moved from monohulls to those catamarans.

Lost its charm in many ways didn't it? Some of those old monohulls were beautiful, catamarans just aren't the same.

NZ will put AC back on track again, next series Monohulls are better suited to Auckland's sea and weather conditions and more about seamanship skills than drag racing.
    Cheers, Rob.

Oracle Changes Course, Wins Second Race of America's Cup Match

(Sept 14) Oracle Team USA was unrelenting upwind in Race 8 Saturday, and eventually used an ETNZ fumble to pass them on the upwind leg. Oracle clears their points penalty and brought speed to the game for the first race Saturday. Race 9 was abandoned at Mark 2 for high winds.

The cats are scary things I reckon.

Would hate to be in a big sea in the middle of the night on one that's for sure !!

Something magical about monohulls, a timeless design that still hasn't been improved on really. Should have been in Petter's 'Beatiful Design' thread really. I went to see a pal set off in the Clipper race in 2007 and the fleet was just special:

Even though the paint and logos are a bit garish, some of them look like they have been decorated by monkeys on crack, the fleet was an awesome sight and the boats just blew me away. Even though they are very much about function they are beautiful things to look at and I'm not normally a guy that drools over cars and stuff.

I think the cats they are using are awesome. It's the GP racing of maxis.

America cup racing was a non event for spectators until these things were flying around imo. 50+ knots and hooking hard left or right with both massive boats sometimes 10 metres apart kept me watching...spectacular.

Monos are sleek and beautiful but these things getting up on their hydrofoils and hammering is racing...these guys are pretty brave doing this stuff I think.

I haven't been able to watch the monos racing ever...like watching snails race...obviously a purest thing but it's my perspective.

    My 2 cents worth...

It's finally got competitive in the last few races with each boat having to dip the stbd tack boat on the upwind legs, so good spectator stuff.

    Cricket -v- Baseball ???
Trouble is the prohibitive cost of these 'flying boats' ... sure it makes for great TV or YouTube but thats not what sailboat racing's all about.
