Scenic day drives from CM? Or an overnight drive

We are planning to be in CM for 3 nights in April

I don't like the regular temple/tours type things but more just driving to cool places
I know the weather plays a part, but any good day drives or even if we stay over a night somewhere?

    Thanks

EDIT.....or if it is even worth it to come in middle of April?

Coming in April is risky.. Not only is it hot season, so the least pleasant, its also possibly smog season, which ranges from some light haze to terrible. You really cant predict what it would be like as it changes very much due to weather.. this year was pretty rough a few days.

    Day trips..

    Inthanon
    Samoeng Loop
    The Giant in Mae On
    Tourist stuff in Mae Rim
Pai (more at least an over nighter)
    Etc etc etc

We are having mad wildfires in BC
We were in the states and the night we got back it was horrendous.
Walking to work that next morning was unbearable

May give it a pass.......don't want to risk it
Too bad.....easy flight from Luang Prabang then a direct to Samui later

Oh well......lets rendezvous in Samui then!

If I am around.. I could bail to Samui for the month, Its perfect timing for a beach break.

I would also add LP is the same issues with smog, the entire north from Shan state Myanmar to Vietnam has it. Although LP has the appeals of its old town vibe so probably could be ok even if its a bad few days.

Just read that burning season ends end of March in LP
I am going to read more because I don't even want to take a chance of that haze.....it was horrible here last weekend

Might have to do a week in Japan then! Ao would go for that

But I was really getting into seeing Laos

Haze season in so variable.. It can be anything from March to May.. It can be light, or it can be kinda nasty (usually no more than a week or so somewhere in those 2+ months)..

Its also HOT and dry.. topping 40 sometimes.

Its unusual to get it all bad at any one pick.. But you just never know.

For sure Pai for a look.

I found it kinda untypical from the rest of villages and towns in Thailand. For me, I always find Thailand a lot of same same, a lot of places look and feel the same. I didn't find that with Pai for whatever reason.

edit: I was only there for the night and smoked a few doobs also... So.

    ... So, maybe a hallucination? 55
One of these days I'd like to make it up to the Chang Mai area, but all my dive spots are either in Krabi province or the Adaman Sea.

    Wise move!!

Stick to the coasts & islands in April, further south the more moderate (if you call it that) the temperature

It's a shame I really want to do Pai and Laos
But we always seem to go back from Songkran to see her and the other part of the year is off to Boston for my family, Thanksgiving and Xmas
    Someday

Plus side is we settled on Hanoi and a 2 night Halong Bay cruise
I really want to do the Halong Bay cruise for some time and I still have 3 or 4 days to play with

We are also surprisingly going to do Phuket for a few days.
Honestly never thought I'd be back but it is just an easy option to drive down after 6 days in HH
Plus we will have a 15 and 16yr old with us and Phuket/Patong really does give them a lot of options

And paying for 5 flights from Phuket is a lot cheaper than paying for 5 flights from Samui!!
