    The education thread

I am sure you are all in for a big surprise when reading the result of the International Mathematical Olympiad 2015, which this year were held in Chiang Mai.

The US won, which is a surprise in itself, but the really big surprise for me was seeing Thailand as number 12 out of 104 countries. Far better than Denmark and most western countries.

Yeah, I'm not buying that one. I know South Korea have always been strong, but with all the poverty in China I doubt they would be on the list.
Then again it seem to be only 2 students from each country so any country could win I guess. I would for sure send someone with autism 555

I don't think the leader take part. They are like the "managers". Normally older and have done so in the past tho. Really good Channel 4 documentary a while back on the British team.

There are 5 students in each team, and as Kris-one says, the leaders does not take part. Hosting an event usually does influence the performance, but even so, Thailand was number 21 last year. Still far ahead of Denmark and other western countries.

It should be noted that some countries does have a very big population to draw from, which may explain why small western countries is placed way down on the list.

LivinLOS, there's a photo of the US team here:

It does look as if the white ones are outnumbered.

When I interviewed a potential accountant for my business I asked him, "what's 1 + 1 equal? " he said "any number you want".....

If people question that a car/truck is showing accidents on carfax, autocheck ect.. The answer is, "it's not how many accidents the car has, it's how many it has left!"

Back in the ages, we didn't have carfax, or autocheck and such.

I was in college and working, so I bought myself a car. Catching my eye was a one year old 69' Pontiac Firebird 400 with only 4500 miles on the tach. It was a beauty, with canary yellow paint scheme, black vinyl interior with wood grained dash, and speedometer that went to 160 MPH (555). And a price that was almost unbelievably low.

It served me well for a very long time. Into the car's old age (13 years or so), I finally noticed a little cracking (maybe rust under the paint) around the upper rear window joint and wondered WTF it was. I took it to a body shop and the guy told me that it was a weld/putty joint that was going South, a little bit? I asked about a "weld" there, and he said that the car had obviously been rolled and crushed at one time. 555

Oh well, "if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't".

It was a 69' (tee, hee, heee), I changed it above.

Something about that vinyl covered driver's seat that always tickled my erogenous zone. 555
