I reckon we have all taken those trips Phi Phi Islands etc

Dunno I'm used to South African seas which are way rougher than anything I have seen around Phuket.

I thought they were more South than Pi Pi islands. No shelter from sea and swell by the island of Phuket. Those waves come rolling in from the Indian Ocean.

I'm actually not sure of actual location Cappie...

I just think of all seas off Phuket as reasonably mild given the odd rip tide off Kata Noi... Nai Harn etc

Of course one should be cautious in any ocean but having dived and surfed in Mozambique and SA and knowing the treacherous nature of the sea around that area this appears something out the ordinary to me.

    What you think?

I think there is a good chance the boat was heavily overloaded and shouldn't have even have left port.
The storm must have been forecast.
RIP to those who have been lost.

With the monsoon season you can have strong winds and heavy seas, especially on the West coast and South of Phuket.
I stayed in Kathu 2 weeks ago and there exceptionally strong winds. I thought a lot of dammage, 90 houses dammaged...
I stayed on the Loch Palm golf and in front of my house a palm tree went down.
And Mozambique is nice, but I once escaped a hurricane in the Mozambique channel and you couldn’t say it was a nice sea.

    It's not just the ferries.

Way back in 2008 or so, went to JB Island. If you have been you'll know they take you out from a lagoon in longboats, ready for a return trip to the Gypsy island in the middle of nowhere.

Our trip got caught in a storm, the overhead canopy was blown away and the boat was taking on water with no land in sight. The guy piloting the longboat looked ready to shit himself.
That storm could have been forseen with satellite images. Its not rocket science, but once again, the power of the baht takes over.

Like their driving on the roads, everything seems left to chance and luck. I wouldn't risk my families lives again on a poxy boat trip.

Me and Dupree went to Mexico specifically to swim with whale sharks

They cancelled all boats out 3days in advance because of the forecast

That's an industry and country taking safety first

Good point... so many times I've seen people swimming out the red flags in Thailand.

    They are oblivious.

I think there is a problem with ferries everywhere in Thailand. Check also Koh Samui and Koh Chang.

Sad they don't do the same with their own people....it's so unsafe that they have to flee to the US 555

My regular taxi driver was saying that all the taxis were talking about the rough seas from the day(s) prior and that he actually told a client not to go on a planned trip because of that buzz (guy and his wife didn't go that day as a result - probably not the same boat though). Apparently they were hearing from the people they were picking up how rough it was. I don't know much about it but apparently it was the fact that the waves were coming in 3's rather than a one big wave so the boats weren't good at handling it - so maybe not great boat, not probably great captains/staff, and weird weather patterns/waves. Totally can see that disaster happening!!
