    a bit of bad weather

Phuket 50 Shades of Grey as Dive Boat Sinks, Landslip Alarms Kamala Residents

    By Phuketwan Reporters
    Tuesday, October 8, 2013
PHUKET: A landslip in Kamala, a dive boat sinking at Chalong and a couple prepared to wait for a sunny beach wedding are the latest signs of a prolonged rainy period on Phuket today.

The landslip came at 8.45am on a lane off the main road in Kamala.

Officials were quick to clear the area of the saturated earth that collapsed onto a section of road about 25 metres long by three metres wide.

The dive boat, at anchor in Chalong Bay, tipped and sank at its shallow moorings yesterday and divers managed to retrieve equipment left on board.

The owners were today reluctant to reveal more about the incident, other than to confirm it had happened.

The couple waiting for a sunny day so their beach wedding can go ahead have been on standby for a week of grey skies - and may have a long wait.

Phuket is likely to remain grey until the end of October, a spokesperson for the Phuket-based Southern Meteorological Centre (West Coast) said today.

''There is no sign of this weather system moving away and so the forecast is for more rain in Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranong and Satun,'' he said.

''It's no better on the Gulf side of the isthmus at the moment. Skies may not clear properly until November.''

He said waves of up to two meters close to shore, winds gusting up to 45kmh and medium to heavy rain should keep small boats from going to sea.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation will become more concerned about potentially serious landslips as more areas of the Andaman provinces become saturated.

As also posted elsewhere - clear and sunny in Kamala this morning - the washing is out 555!

P.S. Given that the weather can be very unpredictable on Phuket, with many microclimates due to the hills, I still haven't found a weather forecast site that coincides with what I see outside!

Have you tried windguru ?? Does cover the micro climates but is mostly wind and surf swell related with some weather info.

Saw some crazy weather this morning. Left the house at 6.30 am to go to the airport, sky was mostly clear clear and just a light breeze. Half way to the airport I am driving through deep standing water on the road with the windscreen wipers flat out unable to clear the deluge coming down. Two kilometres further I am on dry roads again but overcast skies. Another short distance and I am back in the heavy rain. Arrived at the airport to broken cloud and no rain but a lot of standing water.
