One early report said that a short circuit started the fire, which spread to the firecracker section of the store. Another report said the short circuit had ignited gas tanks.

A firecracker section in a big store?
WTF, they must be joking. Of course, i suspect there are no laws prohibiting that

Nobody is a social drinker. Everybody drinks to get drunk. I mean, nobody drinks 10 pints of coke in a night

I am not joking, but they must be joking and mad if they find no harm in storing firecrackers in a store. It is an accident waiting to happen.

Thats a major fire for those under equipped and probably not super well trained firefighters to try to control.

A major blaze for a developing world fire force.. Hope everyone stays safe.

A real shame. A great store, price wise. Was super for our business because they deliver. We just had to order and they would deliver 3-5 times a month.
I know (really just heard), that there were fatalities, but we may never know how many.

It sounds a lot but the place was huge almost to the point you could use GPS to get around it. Hard to imagine everyone got out safely and a missing persons centre has been set up.

I would imagine that a lot of fire regulations were ignored but that was the nature of the place, if they complied it would cost so much it would no longer be Supercheap. The effect of this will affect thousands, small shop owners who bought stock there and those who earn so little this was their source of affordable staples.

Two bits of news, the place is said to be insured for 900 million baht but the cost of the blaze is estimated at 100 million baht. Bit of a difference.

I watched a 5 house (tin shack) blaze here. A firemen went into to site then minutes later ran out and kicked off his smouldering flip flops.

Disturbing chatter on the net about staff closing fire exits to prevent people leaving with goods. Unconfirmed reports of "many" deaths.

If Global in CM is anything to go by, then when it burnt down, they rebuilt/opened in ~ 8 months.

A monster of a fire and sad that there are fatalities - locking the place down to prevent looting is appalling.
