    Vietnam Info?

    We are booked for a few nights in Saigon next time out. Any recent experiences? It's a new country for me so looking forward to it but not sure what to expect.

    Me and my usual Kiwi travelling buddy, a guy. He thinks there is quite a nightlife scene there now, I'm not so sure. I'm expecting it to be a little conservative, more like Vientiane than Bangkok, it's still a communist country isn't it? So some military restrictions around etc.

    Could be way off and would be interested in a recent perspective from someone who has been. I'm not too bothered about rowdy nightlife myself these days, more interested to see a new country than anything else.

    I like Vietnam....a lot. It definitely (nightlife) is not in your face, but can be found. Stay in District 1, HCMC, and roam around there. Look for places with a neon #, like '59', and that will be a "billiards" place, that will have 10-15 fl's there. Really some great restaurants there at very reasonable prices.

    that Apocolypse Now had as many girls as any BKK club i've been to and right in middle of the action

    we went to a great trendy typebar/disco right by the Rex Hotel( a few blocks away)
    it seemed to be regular type girls but i think could be had easily

    We can't get visas online but the process seems easy. I have the form already, it is a bit expensive tho;

    You get the letter online, the Visa is issued on arrival. You didn't have to wait in a queue for yours (about 30 mins)?

    We have to send our passports to the embassy, same as getting a Myanmar visa, so I'm assuming we can get them in advance. I've done it with Cambodia as well, that always looks like a pain in the ass getting into country and then having to fluff around in a queue for a visa.

    if memory serves me right (ahem) the gals in Apocolypse Now worked a bit different to any Thai club Ive been to. At first I honestly thought I was in with a regular chick when she handed me her phone number, It was when another guy explained to me that they give you the number you call and arrange the deed. The was a bar a bit further on that always looked dark and some what seedy were the girls kept on about going up stairs to play (ahem) pool. But I didnt venture up as the lady in question was not my type. I did find a good expat bar near the square and by the river the is a large bar witch had a good band and every seemed to buy a bottle of scotch,then when they had finnished for the night a mark was placed on the mount left and the bottle placed in a big cabinet for next time.

    I can't remember which nightclub we were in HCMC but it was obviously one that wasn't used to westerners. Was very upmarket etc but the number of bouncers that started rushing around and yelling into their coms when I turned up had me pissing myself laughing.
    I was with locals so don't know the process but we ended up with a 5 star Karaoke room and the usual procession to choose from. Was quality...other than being personally escorted by two bouncers to and from the toilet every time I left the room 555.

    They also have "Karaoke" in obscure buildings that you'd never find if you were on your own. Very friendly people...
